He was a founding member of the Washington Color School, an artistic movement which became associated with Washington, D.C. painters. His paintings evolved from luminous geometric abstractions to fields of brilliant modulated color.

Springtime painting by artist Sally Michel Sally Michel Artist  Sally Avery Michel studied at the Art Students League and spent summers painting in Gloucester, MA, where she met and married Milton Avery in 1926. The Avery's spent summer vacations traveling. During these times and later Sally and Milton shared studio space and acted as critics and collaborators for each other. Their styles begin to come together, becoming known as the "Avery style".
